Otherdeed sediments: the most overlooked trait

Sediment is the most overlooked trait on an Otherdeed — the ground layer underneath the terrain. Unlike resources and artifacts, sediment is universal: every one of the 100,000 plots has exactly one of five sediment types, each at a tier from 1 to 3. It's easy to scroll past, but it's one of the traits that has already had a real job in an actual game, so it's worth five minutes to understand.

The five sediments

Biogenic Swamp sediment
Biogenic Swamp10,000 plots — the scarce one
Chemical Goo sediment
Chemical Goo20,000 plots
Rainbow Atmos sediment
Rainbow Atmos22,000 plots
Cosmic Dream sediment
Cosmic Dream23,000 plots
Infinite Expanse sediment
Infinite Expanse25,000 plots — the common one

The supplies are suspiciously round — 10,000 / 20,000 / 22,000 / 23,000 / 25,000 — which strongly suggests deliberate target allocation rather than dice rolls. Biogenic Swamp, at exactly one plot in ten, is the clear scarcity outlier of the five.

Sediment tiers: the second axis

Each sediment also carries a tier, 1 to 3 — roughly half the plots at tier 1, a third at tier 2, a fifth at tier 3. So, just as with environments, two dimensions matter: the type and the tier. The scarce combination is a high tier of an already-scarce type — a tier-3 Biogenic Swamp plot is roughly one deed in fifty, the intersection of the scarcest sediment and the least common tier.

A trait with a track record

Here's why I tell people not to skip this article: in Legends of the Mara, Yuga's 2023 strategy game, your deed's sediment determined which Fragments you could farm, and the sediment tier set the yield — the higher the tier, the more Fragments per harvest. (Environment tier did real work in that game too, governing worker capacity.) Whether the next game uses sediment the same way, nobody outside Yuga knows — but "this trait has already mattered once" is a different statement than "this trait might matter someday." It's no longer a purely speculative metadata field.

Sediment is rarely the whole story

Sediment usually acts as one condition in a larger profile: Biogenic Swamp with no deposits, Biogenic Swamp with four slots filled, tier-3 Biogenic Swamp with a rare resource, tier-3 Biogenic Swamp with a rare and an artifact — each added condition narrows the matching set of deeds. That's compound rarity again. One warning that applies here as much as anywhere: don't estimate those combinations by multiplying percentages. Traits can be correlated by how the land was generated, and this site holds the complete data, so the better question is always "how many deeds actually have both?" — an observed count, not a theoretical one.

Reading it on the deed

On any deed page here — say #2, a tier-3 Biogenic Swamp plot — the sediment card shows the type, the tier, and how many of the 100,000 plots share the exact combination. The ring color around the card is sampled from the sediment's actual artwork. Sediment is usually not the headline trait; it's often part of what makes the full configuration unusual.

Next in the series: Resources — the deposits on top of the land, and the deepest trait system in Otherside.
